A large multinational beverage company was interested in the Estonian beverage packaging deposit system, which shows excellent recycling results and has consumers and other key stakeholders’ support. Introduced in 2005, it is considered a best practice among the industry experts and its learnings could be useful also in the other markets where the beverage packaging deposit system is introduced. For example, Lithuanian deposit system is largely based on the Estonian experience.

CEEREC prepared a case study, which analyzed all the key areas of the deposit system like the legal frame, stakeholder engagement, trade role and responsibilities, key processes, technologies applied, financial performance and consumer education. Also, creation of the deposit system operator “Eesti Pandipakend” Ltd. was discussed in detail.  The study provided a set of key recommendations how to design, establish and run a successful deposit system.

The project was implemented in 2016.
